Synopsis

Buku ini membahas langkah-langkah mengenal spesies tumbuhan dengan referensi khusus pohon. Sebagai langkah awal, buku ini mengkaji tata cara penamaan tumbuhan dan morfologi organ-organ tumbuhan. Pengetahuan tentang morfologi organ-organ tumbuhan kemudian dijadikan dasar untuk belajar mengoleksi spesimen tumbuhan, mengidentifikasi/mendeterminasi spesies tumbuhan, mengenal anakan pohon, mengenal famili pohon tanpa bunga, serta mendiskripsikan tumbuhan. Selain tatacara mengenal pesies tumbuhan, buku ini juga memuat kajian taksonomi dan sistem kelasifikasi. Pada bagian akhir buku ini disajikan deskripsi lengkap 53 famili pohon penting/berguna yang dapat ditemukan di wilayah geografis Malesia. Setiap famili yang dideskripsikan dilengkapi dengan foto-foto berwarna dari beberapa contoh spesies yang memiliki nilai ekonomi.

Penulis utama (Putu Oka Ngakan) adalah dosen senior pengajar dendrologi pada Fakultas Kehutanan Universitas Hasanuddin. Sejak penelitian untuk penyelesaian sekripsi sarjananya pada awal tahun 1980an, dia sudah melewatkan bertahun-tahun waktunya untuk penelitian di dalam hutan, terutama di wilayah Kalimantan Timur, Kalimantan Utara, Kalimantan Selatan, Sulawesi Selatan serta tempat lainnya. Pengalamannya bertahun-tahun di lapangan telah memberinya pengetahuan tentang langkah-langkah sederhana dan pengenalan spesies tumbuhan yang sangat diperlukan bagi para peneliti di bidang ekologi vegetasi, botani, para rimbawan dan mereka yang tertarik belajar tumbuhan. Penulis pendamping adalah juga dosen pengajar dendrologi di Fakultas Kehutanan Universitas Hasanuddin Fakultas, Fakultas Kehutanan Unsulbar, dan Fakultas Kehutanan Universitas Andi Jemma.
